Download & Upload Time Calculator

Calculate the theoretical duration of a file transfer from its size and bandwidth. The calculator works equally for downloads and uploads.

Transfer details

The same calculation applies to downloads and uploads.

What this tool does

The calculator uses a file size and transfer rate to estimate the theoretical duration of one download or upload.

It uses decimal units: one MB equals 1,000,000 bytes, and one Mbit/s equals 1,000,000 bits per second.

How to use the tool

  1. Enter the size of the file you want to transfer and choose its unit.
  2. Enter the available download or upload bandwidth and choose its unit.
  3. Run the calculation to see the estimated time and the normalized values in bytes and bits per second.

Useful applications

  • Estimate how long a game update, backup or video download could take on a known connection.
  • Estimate the expected upload time for large files before backing them up or sharing them with other people.
  • Compare how different bandwidths affect the same file transfer.

Notes and limitations

  • The result is a theoretical estimate that assumes a constant, actually available bandwidth.
  • Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi variation, parallel transfers, server limits and other network traffic can extend the real transfer time.

Frequently asked questions

Why can the actual transfer time differ from the estimate?

The usable bandwidth varies and commonly includes protocol overhead. The target server, other transfers and the local network can also slow a transfer down.
