How Merge works

Slide every tile as far as possible. Equal neighboring tiles merge once per move, and the new tile adds its value to your score.

What this tool does

Merge is a compact number puzzle on a 4×4 board. Move tiles in four directions and combine equal neighbors into one tile with twice the value.

How to use the tool

  1. Use the arrow keys or W, A, S and D to move every tile toward one edge, or swipe across the board on a touch device.
  2. A valid move creates one new tile in an empty cell; a move that changes nothing creates no tile and adds no points.
  3. Combine tiles to increase the score by the value of each newly created tile, then continue until no move remains.

Useful applications

  • Play a short, self-contained puzzle session without installing a game.
  • Practice planning several moves ahead on a responsive desktop or touch board.

Notes and limitations

  • The best score and, when available, the current board and score are stored in this browser's local storage; blocked or damaged storage is ignored safely.
  • Reaching the 2048 tile shows a milestone message, but the game remains playable and supports larger values.
  • The game is client-side and does not use a backend or send gameplay moves to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Can I continue after reaching 2048?

Yes. The milestone is only a message, so you can keep moving and merging tiles while empty cells or valid merges remain.

What happens if local storage is unavailable?

The game continues in memory, but the best score and current game cannot be restored after the page is reloaded.
